Select a state to see its routes
The top row lists every province, state, or country in the current country. Click one to load its routes into the row below. The number in parentheses next to each region's name is how many routes we have for it.
Which country you are looking at was set when the page opened. If you arrived here from a route post's Explore button, the country is the one that post belongs to.
Every route in the selected region, sorted alphabetically. Scroll the row left and right to see them all. Click any route name to select it.
Click the Filter badge that sits just to the left of the active region. It opens a modal with one button per starting letter or digit that actually exists among the region's routes. The number in the badge next to the word Filter shows how many routes are currently visible in the row.
Click a letter like A or S, or a digit if any routes start with a number. The route row behind the modal narrows to only routes starting with that character. Inside the modal, each route also appears as a colored button you can click directly.
Click All in the modal to show every route in the region again. Closing the modal without clicking a letter leaves the current filter in place.
The route appears on the map in blue, drawn from start to finish. The map pans to the route's start. A small readout appears at the bottom of the screen with the progress bar on top - current distance on the left, total distance on the right - and the playback controls just below it.
A checkmark appears to the left of the selected route's name in the route row, and the badge picks up an inset ring. The checkmark moves to whichever route you pick next. If you switch regions, all checkmarks clear.
Zoom into the map to speed up animation. Zoom out to slow down playback. Use your scroll mouse or pinch to zoom in or out.
Ends any playback and returns the map to showing the whole selected route. The route stays selected, so the other controls keep working without you having to pick the route again.
Starts playback: an icon moves along the route from the start, leaving a trail behind it. Click again to pause. Click a third time to resume.
You can also press the spacebar to toggle pause or resume, as long as a route is playing or paused.
Jumps the playback back to the start of the route and begins playing again from the beginning.
Stops playback and draws the entire selected route at once, without animating. Same result as clicking Stop.
The gear button cycles through five playback speeds, shown as 1st (slowest) through 5th (fastest). You can change gears mid-playback and the animation adjusts smoothly without restarting.
Pauses any playback and opens the same popup you get by clicking the moving icon: the route name, total distance, and buttons for Share, Directions, Fuel, and Weather. Click the pin again to close the popup.
While a route is playing, tap the moving icon (the car, bike, or walker). Playback pauses and a popup opens with the route name and total distance, plus up to four buttons:
Share copies the post URL for this route. Only shown when a post actually exists.
Directions opens Google Maps with the route's start and end.
Fuel opens the fuel cost calculator with this route's distance already filled in.
Weather opens the weather page with six sampled points from this route.
Tapping the marker again closes the popup, and tapping anywhere else on the map closes it too. Playback stays paused until you press Play again.
The map never changes the zoom level on its own. Whatever zoom you set is respected during playback, and it is remembered the next time you open this tool.
Your chosen travel icon, distance unit, map theme, and playback gear are also remembered between visits.
